White Grenache

White Grenache is widespread throughout Spain, being particularly abundant in Tarragona, Zaragoza and Teruel.

It has not very large and compact pendants. The berries are medium in size, round in shape and yellow-green in color. It has traditionally been used alone or mixed with Red Grenache, Macabeo, Parellada, Muscat or Pedro Ximenes to make mistela. It produces wines of great body and much alcohol, of straw yellow color; it gives off floral and fruity aromas with a broom background that gives it originality.

It is the main variety in the Alella Designation of Origin, Costers del Segre, Tarragona and Terra Alta and is authorized in Cariñena, Cigales, Empordà, Navarra, Priorat, Rioja and Somontano.

One third of the world’s production of this variety comes from the vineyards of the DO Terra Alta.

We go back to 1647 to find the first document written about White Grenache by Monsignor Onofre Català; and collected by Monsignor Manyà in the book “Notes d’Història de Gandesa” (1962). In this letter, he clearly mentions that “vernatxa” (white) has been planted on one of the estates belonging to the parish of Gandesa”.

Throughout the Mediterranean arc, several authors have previously mentioned in their literary works, the vernaccia (Italian), vernassa (Valencian) or vernaixa (Catalan); such as the Catalan author Eiximenis in his work “Lo Crestià” from 1385. Although it is not known for sure if they refer to the same variety, they define these wines as dry and liqueur white wines.
