Tempranillo
Tempranillo is a red grape strain resulting from the spontaneous crossing of the albillo mayor and the benedicto. The first written reference to the variety is supposedly in the plural form las tempraniellas in the book Libro de Alexandre published in the 13th century and referring to the Ribera del Duero area. The following mention is found in 1513 in a book by the agronomist Gabriel Alonso de Herrera under the synonym of Aragonés. The name Aragonese comes from the ancient Crown of Aragon, a word that was used to describe both Grenache and Tempranillo.
Finally, recent studies place its origin in an indeterminate area between La Rioja and Navarre.
