Merlot

Merlotis a red variety, productive and early sprouting strain. The droplet is cylindrical, small and sparse. The grain is small, thick-skinned, sweet pulp, and bluish black in color. It belongs to the same family as the Cabernet: Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The name comes from the French diminutive of blackbird probably because of its similarity to its black plumage.

Merlot is native to the Bordeaux region, where it is the most widely grown variety. It is used mainly in the production of medoc, a red Burgundy from the Médoc region. It is also the most widely grown red grape variety in Veneto and is used in the making of many wines from northern Italy. The production of varietal merlot wine in California has increased significantly recently. It has become an international variety, the second most widespread red variety after Cabernet Sauvignon, used mainly as an improved variety in blends to provide softness and balance.
