Macabeo

The Macabeo is a variety whose geographical origin is located between Catalonia and Aragon. From here it spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula and southern France, although we also find it in California, North Africa, Mallorca and Extremadura. It is very important in Castile, Navarre and La Rioja, where it is known as Viura; where it was formerly used to soften the tannins of red wines. Even today we find small proportions in some new red wines. Although it is found all over Catalonia, it is mainly concentrated in the Penedès and Terra Alta, and is also common in the Empordà and Tarragona.
Other denominations for Macabeo are Maccabéu and Charas Blanc (France), Alcañón (Aragon) and Macameu in the Terra Alta.

Along with Xarel·lo and Parellada, it is one of the base wines for the production of cava, although we find other applications such as single-variety wines, for making blends, aged wines and also for sweet or mistel wines. .
